The excitement of completing a piece of artwork is like that of finishing a race. How long that satisfaction will last will depend on whether the work is able to sustain your interest or the race set new record. A work completed is a work well done. Its real challenge is whether the journey to completion is rich in experience and the end product provides lasting pleasure to the observer. It is not uncommon for artist to adjust or even rework in order to improve it.

This exhibition features eight large works by Teo Eng Seng that have been
reworked. Some of them were exhibited before they were reworked, for
example "Celebration" exhibited at the Substation in1996. It was a
beautiful piece of work but the artist felt that it was not intense
enough. He wanted a bit of "soul" in the work so in 2009 he repainted the
whole painting. In another painting, he found the composition too
complicated so he destroyed it and created a painting based on the
disaster of the space shutter, "Columbia". The process of this painting
was filmed as part of the television documentary film "Self-Portrait" Teo
Eng Seng. Other paintings were reworked for various other reasons like a
sudden realisation ..., refocusing, change of interest, etc. So we can
safely say that a work is completed in as far as it continues to sustain
the interest of the artist otherwise it is obsolete.
Come see the exhibition and meet the artist.
