Ocean Heartbeats
An exhibition of contemporary
Chinese ink painting by Tay Kiam Hong
16 to 24 November 2008 (11 a.m. - 7 p.m.)
Tay Kiam Hong is an artist to watch closely as he is never static even though his painting subject remains small creatures in the sea. He believes in focusing on something in depth and developing fully both his technique and concept of painting. Despite a demanding role as an interior designer, he paints and exhibits regularly. He believes in painting for art’s sake and very much for himself and thus he is able to focus on his personal interests rather than being swayed by trends.
While the works in his first solo exhibition of sea horses, mud skippers, squids, turtles etc were lyrical and poetic, the coming exhibition concentrates on jelly fish for its transparency and powerful evasive form. He has innovated a technique to express these qualities. His works demonstrate simplicity of line and form in his most precise and purest rendering.

His experience would have been very much the richer had he been able to dive into the ocean to rub bodies with the sea creatures; his paintings would have been all the more experiential, powerful and monumental.  However, he is presently more concerned with the visual qualities of the underwater world.  His paintings are landscapes of sea creatures as he is more of an observer of these beauties through seeing them in aquariums, television screens and knowledge of them gained through extensive research through reading and listening.  The challenge in his work is how to express them in Chinese ink on rice paper of various shades and textures; how these creatures live and swim together in schools and the spectacle of the view.  They are painted small and in groups and viewers will be able to appreciate their beautiful, delicate and changeable forms as in the case of jelly fish.  When viewers look at them individually the artist betrays his joy in technical innovation in his paintings.
